Canadian GST Information
Canada established the GST in 1991. The Canadian government has enacted roughly 50 regulations under the Federal Turnover Tax Act. Canada levies many turnover taxes at the federal and provincial levels, including goods and services tax (GST), provincial sales tax (PST), unified sales tax (HST), and Quebec sales tax (QST) (the Quebec Sales Tax-QST).

 GST
The Goods and Services Tax (GST) is a federal sales tax applied in Canada. The standard GST tax rate is 5%. The GST is a full-link VAT charge that applies to almost all goods and services. However, 0% tax rates will be adopted for some prescription medications, government, agricultural, fishing activities, and transportation services.
 PST
Each province has its own sales tax. Currently, only federal and provincial taxes are collected separately in British Columbia and Saskatchewan, at 7% and 6%, respectively. The rest are subjected to GST, PST, or HST. In addition, RST is a subset of PST, although it is referred to differently. Currently, only Manitoba levies RST at a rate of 7%.
 HST
HST is a unified sales tax comprising the federal Goods and Services Tax (GST) and the provincial sales tax (PST). The HST rate is the sum of the GST and PST rates, and provinces have distinct provincial taxes, such as 8% for Ontario and 10% for Prince Edward Island. The HST is identical to the GST and applies to all goods and services.
 QST
Due to historical reasons, Quebec, Canada has a distinct QST and Quebec sales tax, which is also a VAT; the current tax rate is 9.975%.

For instance, if you are selling a $100 item in Quebec, you must add 5% GST and 9.975% PST/QST.

GST (5%): $4.35

QST (9.975%): $8.68

Total Before Tax: $86.98

For further information on calculating GST/PST/HST in Canada, please see the Canadian Revenue Agency's website for all applicable PST rates.

When Should You Register?

If you are a foreign or cross-border business that provides taxable goods or services in Canada, you may be required to register for the Goods and Services Tax (GST) and comply with the related accounting and payment requirements.

You may be required to register for GST as a non-resident if you satisfy the following conditions:

  • You make taxable sales of merchandise in Canada.

  • You are considered a large vendor.

A small supplier is a person/business whose income (together with all affiliated persons' revenue) from global taxable supplies was $30,000 or less in a calendar quarter and over the previous four calendar quarters.

You may still register voluntarily if your sales are less than $30,000.

Need a Fiscal Representative?

In Canada, appointing a local fiscal representative is voluntary.

You may, however, hire an accountant to handle your GST compliance on your behalf.
