German Battery Law

Germany converted the European Battery Directive 2006 / 66 / EG into a national law. The Battery Law (BattG) took effect on 1 December 2009 and applies to all types of batteries and batteries. The law requires sellers to be responsible for sold batteries and recycle used batteries.

Under BattG Law, the seller must register with a recycling body and file quarterly declarations. In addition, the BattG law also requires a yearly summary to be filed.

The purpose of BattG is to increase the percentage of batteries that are returned. This is because batteries contain valuable raw materials as well as substances that are environmental and health hazards. The BattG law extends the responsibility of manufacturers for the batteries they place on the market to cover the entire life cycle of their equipment.

It therefore requires manufacturers, distributors or importers of batteries who must contribute to the cost of disposing of them. Companies are obliged to take back the batteries they have placed on the market and dispose of them in accordance with specific environmental standards.

Do I need to Register?

If you are selling batteries or products that include batteries in Germany, you are required to register with an EPR provider and declare recycling. Moreover, if you are an Amazon seller, as of 1st of January 2022 it is also an Amazon Seller Central requirement for all vendors selling goods that fall under German EPR to register with and EPR Service Provider.
