WEEE Germany

German WEEE is the Scrapped Electronic and Electrical Equipment Recovery Act (ElektroG), implemented in EU Directive 2002 / 96 / EC (WEEE); applies to all electronic and electrical equipment up to 1000 V AC or 1500 V DC. The aim of the law is to increase the percentage of electrical appliances taken back in the end of their life in order to protect the environment. For this purpose, the Federal Environment Agency (“Umweltbundesamt”) set up the „Stiftung ear“.

The German WEEE Directive requires you to register all electronic equipment before putting it on the market. In order to do this you must apply for a WEEE number and regularly report the quantity sold ensuring that the products are disposed of in an environmentally friendly way. The registrations are not EU wide and must be done separately Germany.

Question: Do portable chargers such as power banks need a WEEE certification in Germany?

Answer: No, power banks do not need to be registered with WEEE, they should be registered under the German Battery Act, as it is pure battery. Therefore this product would require registration for packaging recycling and battery recycling.

Question: Can unbranded products be registered for WEEE?

Answer: WEEE product recycling is not responsible for brand verification, international brands or other people's brands, if the product falls under the WEEE category it should be registered regardless of its brand name..
